Instructions for Inoculation:

  1. Gather your materials (spawn bag, liquid culture or spores, sterilization equipment).

  2. Wipe down your work area with 70% rubbing alcohol. Close all windows/doors and turn off any fans/ac/heat units to reduce airflow during inoculation.

  3. We recommend wearing sterile disposable gloves and a facemask during inoculation.

  4. Remove the grain spawn bag from the vac seal bag.

  5. Wipe the entire bag, including the black injection port, with rubbing alcohol.

  6. Sterilize the needle of your spore syringe by holding it in a flame until it glows red. Let it cool before injecting.

  7. Insert the syringe into the injection port. As you inject, move the needle around gently or shift the bag to ensure even distribution.

  8. Gently massage the bag to combine the spawn with the spore solution fully.

  9. Store bag upright where it will remain undisturbed for several weeks. Check your mushroom variety for other specifications.

  10. Check bag regularly for signs of growth or contamination.

  11. Once the bags are fully colonized with mycelium, it’s time to spawn the colonized grain to a substrate.

Tips and Tricks:

  • We recommend 1-2 ccs of liquid culture/spores for every one pound of grain.

  • Inspect your grain bags prior to innoculation to ensure they are free of any signs of contamination (mold, discoloration, or unusual odors). If you notice any signs, please contact us to have replacement sent.

  • Use a flowhood or DIY still air box to help prevent airborne containments during inncoluation.

  • If you use a regular lighter to sterilize your syringe, use alcohol to clean the soot off before injection.

  • Sterilize the needle anytime you remove and reinsert during innoculation.

  • After inncoluation, keep your bag in an upright position with ample space between the filter and bad to encourage proper gas exchange during colonization.
